Things to Know Before Your Summer Trip to Breckenridge

Updated June 2026

Summer is one of the most beautiful times to visit Breckenridge, and while many of our owners know the area as a second home, the mountains are always changing. From new construction projects and growing summer crowds to shifting weather patterns and updated reservation requirements, even longtime visitors can benefit from a few seasonal reminders before arriving. Whether you’re planning outdoor adventures, relaxing around town, or exploring Summit County, here are a few helpful things to know before your next summer stay.

Traffic & Construction

I-70 Summer Traffic

Summer weekends continue to bring heavier traffic along the I-70 mountain corridor, and the I-70 Floyd Hill weekday project will add weekday delays. For the smoothest travel plan on the heaviest traffic Friday afternoons heading west, Sunday afternoons returning east toward Denver, and for periodic 20-minute traffic holds Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn more here: https://www.codot.gov/projects/i70floydhill

Local Construction Around Town

Summer is also a popular season for roadwork and improvement projects throughout Breckenridge and Summit County. Temporary lane closures, detours, and increased traffic near Main Street and major intersections are possible throughout the season.

Ongoing projects:

Resort Closures

Before your visit, we recommend checking your resort’s closures and maintenance schedule for the latest information on seasonal projects, amenity availability, and temporary impacts around the property:

Mountain Safety Reminders

Mountain weather can shift fast, even on sunny mornings. Afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms are common during the summer months.

We recommend:

  • Planning hikes and outdoor activities earlier in the day
  • Packing a light rain jacket or extra layer
  • Checking weather conditions before heading out

At nearly 10,000 feet elevation, altitude can affect visitors more than expected, even longtime owners sometimes notice it during summer activities.

To help adjust:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Limit alcohol on your first day if possible
  • Pace yourself on hikes and bike rides
  • Wear sunscreen, even on cooler days

Seeing wildlife is part of the mountain experience, but it’s important to keep a safe distance.

Please remember:

  • Never approach or feed wildlife
  • Moose can be unpredictable and should be given plenty of space
  • Store food securely during outdoor activities
  • Keep dogs leashed on trails when required

With a drier winter, we anticipate conditions in the mountains may become very dry during summer. Fire restrictions may be in place and can change throughout the season depending on weather conditions.

Before using grills, fire pits, or campfires:

  • Check current local fire restrictions
  • Fully extinguish smoking materials
  • Never leave fires unattended

Even casual dining spots may have longer waits during peak evenings and weekends.
