If you’re looking to enjoy the snowy mountain views but need a break from skiing, snowshoeing is the way to go! It’s a fun way to get some exercise, unwind, and explore the outdoors without dealing with the crowds. Whether you’re a newbie or a pro (or somewhere in between), we’ve got you covered for an awesome snowshoeing adventure in Summit County!

Avalanche Awareness

Avalanche safety awareness isn’t just for backcountry skiers; it’s for snowshoers too! Before heading into the mountains, it is essential that you are prepared. You should not venture into avalanche terrain without proper training and equipment.  You are responsible for ensuring you are aware of and prepared for avalanche risk before venturing into uncontrolled or backcountry areas!

Be sure to pack enough food and water for the day and wear waterproof boots and outerwear; wearing layers is essential for exercising in the cold. Enjoy the peaceful winter serenity from these favorite local trails!

Sallie Barber Mine Trail is an easy 2.8-mile trail with minimal elevation gain making it a great family trail. The trail leads through forest to the Sallie Barber Mine where visitors can see mining equipment. This is a heavily-trafficked trail.

Peaks Trail is a heavily-trafficked trail that leads from near the Northside of Grand Lodge on Peak 7 all the way to Frisco. The entire duration of the trail is 15.3 miles, but you can hike for as long (or short) as you choose! The trail leads through forest with some beautiful overlooks.

Iowa Hill is a shorter, but steeper trail located off of Airport Road. The trail is only 0.7 miles long leading through the forest to mining equipment and structures. This is a great trail to see the mining history of Breckenridge!

Sawmill Reservoir is a Breckenridge classic, especially for those staying at Grand Timber Lodge. Easily accessed from the property, this easy trail is 1.3 miles in length and leads to a lake. Keep in mind there is no parking at this trailhead, but it can be accessed from Grand Timber or via bus. A great alternative for a day off of skiing!

The Breckenridge Recreation path is a groomed trail that weaves through Breckenridge following the Blue River. The rec path would be a great option for beginner snowshoers who do not want to venture into the backcountry. You’ll see recreationists of every kind- from cross-country skiers to fat bikers to snowshoers!

B&B to Reiling Dredge to Minnie Mine is a 2.90-mile loop. This trail is moderately-challenging. Snowshoers will experience some amazing scenery along with some mining relics. This trail would be a good option for those snowshoers open for a little bit more of a challenge!
