View From The Bottom
June 2023
For years, our monthly message has been called “The View from the Bottom.” It’s an unusual name but accurate. BGV leaders don’t spend much time kicking back in fancy office chairs. Instead, you will often find them on the front lines helping their teams create smiles for our owners and guests. A BGV leader doesn’t ask a team member to do a job they aren’t ready, willing, and able to do themselves. Our Housekeeping leaders know where the mops are and how to use them. The General Manager of your property can check you in. BGV’s Accounting leaders buy the sodas and stock the department refrigerator.
This idea of bottom-up leadership is deeply ingrained in BGV’s culture. Mike and Rob Millisor did every job in the early days, from writing contracts to restocking toilet paper. When Mike Dudick became our one-man marketing department, he didn’t just create successful ad campaigns. He made copies, handed out welcome packets, and helped with tours. Our leadership philosophy has never changed. BGV leaders support their teams and lead by example.
We learned another lesson early on. Leaders don’t have a monopoly on good ideas. We seek feedback from all departments and all levels. We mean it when we want every BGV’er to think like a leader, regardless of title.
Many companies have a pyramid-shaped org chart, with bosses at the top. We have a pyramid too, but we flipped it. As the company’s owners, it’s our job to support everyone. We’re on the bottom, looking up, consistently amazed by the accomplishments and collective wisdom of the entire BGV family. It’s a Grand view!
Sincerely,
Mike and Mike
