Ready to hit the slopes but not sure what to pack? We’ve all been there—standing in front of our gear, wondering what we really need for a day of skiing or snowboarding. Whether you’re a pro or just starting out, having the right stuff can make your day on the mountain way more fun. From warm layers to the essentials you can’t forget, here’s what to toss in your bag before you head out for a snowy adventure. Let’s get packing!

Ski & Snowboard Gear

The nuts and bolts! The tools of the trade! The basics! Make sure you’ve got all of your gear to crush your day on the slopes.

  • Ski or Snowboard

You won’t get very far without these! Bring your own or rent. Ski Butlers and Breck Sports offer gear rental discounts to BGV owners and guests.

  • Boots

Don’t forget those ski or snowboard boots. Pro-tip: don’t leave your boots in the car overnight, or you’ll have cold toes and stiff boots!

  • Helmet

Stay safe and play all season! Check out Crainiologie on Main Street if you’re in the market for a new helmet. They have a wide variety of options and styles to choose from. Not only will your helmet help to protect you from injury, it will also serve the purpose of keeping you warm!

  • Ski Poles

Skiers should remember to bring the poles to avoid getting passed by skating snowboarders on the cat tracks!

  • Goggles

Bring along your goggles as well as appropriate lenses for the conditions. Visit the experts at Sun Logic for all the goggles advice you could ask for!

  • Ski Pass or Lift Tickets

If you are a season pass holder, make sure you have your Epic pass packed along. Purchase tickets online in advance if you are planning on buying single-day tickets!

  • Baselayers

The base layer, or layer closest to your skin, is arguably the most important! Look for moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabrics, and avoid cotton to stay dry and warm. If it is an especially cold day, you may want an insulating mid-layer such as a thin puffy jacket or pullover to trap heat. Smartwool socks are a great option for ski socks!

  • Outerwear

Ski jackets and pants on the market today have many features- goggle pockets, powder skirts, armpit zippers, and more. While these features add luxury to your skiing experience, they can also be expensive. The most important features are that your outwear should be waterproof and insulated!

  • Mittens or Gloves

Keep those fingers warm! Ideally, your mittens or gloves should be waterproof and cover the wrists to keep snow out. Mittens will keep your hands warmer by keeping all your heat trapped in one pocket.

  • Neck Warmer

A neck warmer also known as buff, gaiter, or balaclava, provides an extra layer of comfort on your day in the elements. This little piece of material makes a big difference! They can also serve a dual purpose to keep your cheeks and face warm as well.

Snow Clothing

Ski or ride all day with the proper gear to stay warm and dry!

Other Essentials

From the slopes to apres, here’s everything else that you might forget!

  • Sun Protection

The sunlight is intense at 10,000+ feet! In addition to your goggles, make sure you bring your sunscreen, lip balm with SPF, and sunglasses for when you’re off the slopes.

  • Snacks and Water

Did you know you can burn up to 500 calories per hour while skiing or snowboarding?! Bring snacks with protein, fats, and carbs to fuel your body. Whether you bring a pack with a hydration pack or stop at a restaurant for water, take the time to hydrate throughout the day.

  • Hand Warmers

There are some days when those mittens just don’t cut it! If your fingers and toes tend to get extra cold, bring along hand or toe warmers for some extra heat.

  • Hat

When you’re taking a mid-day break for lunch or heading to the hot tub apres ski, pack a hat along to keep your head and ears toasty (and to hide your helmet hair).

  • Apres Wear

Après ski: the social gathering after a day of skiing. You may hit up Main Street restaurants and bars or want to unwind and relax in the hot tub. Either way, pack some comfy clothes, parking lot shoes, and swimwear for those post-slope activities!
